In 2019, the City of Detroit won a US Department of Transportation grant to demonstrate a safe Advanced Driving System (ADS) by deploying a self-driving shuttle service for older adults and people with disabilities. As a research designer on the co:census team, I played a crucial role in connecting product design with community needs through user interviews and focus groups. We engaged stakeholders impacted by the ADS pilot program, gathering insights on their unique challenges and opportunities. This community-driven approach highlighted critical concerns regarding accessibility, logistics, and the need for flexible support within the ADS service. Our findings directly informed the design and implementation of the pilot, ensuring it met the diverse needs of Detroit’s older adults and people with disabilities.
